What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a manual therapy that adopts a causal, non-symptomatic approach; it studies the individual as a whole and seeks the cause, which may be located in a different area of the body than the site of pain. Osteopathy focuses on diagnosing and treating dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system, connective tissue, and viscera.

It was founded in 1874 by an American physician, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, and among its principles, perhaps the most important emphasizes that the body is a single functional unit in which structure and function are closely interconnected.

Osteopaths use a variety of manual techniques, including joint/vertebral mobilizations, manipulations, stretching, and muscle inhibition techniques to improve joint mobility, alleviate pain, and promote the overall well-being of the patient.

The goal of osteopathy is to restore the body’s balance and functionality by encouraging its natural healing process.

Osteopathy is considered a form of complementary and alternative medicine and is practiced in many countries worldwide. Osteopaths must be adequately trained and certified to practice, and in many countries, they adhere to regulated standards of training and professional practice.
